German Shepherd

german shepherdThe German Shepherd possesses a fine lineage: every example can be traced back to a single dog, Horand von Grafrath (formerly Hektor Linksrhein). As the ‘shepherd’ part of the name indicates, these dogs were originally used for herding livestock. These days, however, most decide at an early age to abandon the profession in order to pursue careers with the police or the military. Accomplished at soccer when young, with a particular aptitude for penalty taking, the breed has an unfortunate susceptibility to Chronic Degenerative Radiculomyelopathy (CDRM), a progressive disease of the spinal cord which affects the hind legs, meaning they are often forced to retire from the game early.

German Shepherds are always born between December 23rd and January 18th, meaning they are Capricorns. As such they are very ambitious yet also family-oriented and therefore good with children. Fearsomely loyal, German Shepherds are highly territorial and make very efficient guard dogs, often killing intruders on sight and, if necessary, sacrificing their lives to protect their owners. They have excellent organizational abilities and a proven track record in the field of personal security. The breed’s somewhat cold, aloof personality can be deceptive, however: at heart, these dogs are ‘big softies’ who, in the evenings, like nothing more than to curl up in front of the fire with a good book! They have a refined taste in music, responding most favourably to Wagner’s Ring Cycle and the symphonies of Richard Strauss, and also enjoy ballet and contemporary dance.

I’ve owned over 8 German Shepherd dogs in my time and I could not recommend them as pets or working dogs.
Although on the outside the seem affable enough, once you get to know them, they are idiots.
Once while putting out the rubbish one evening ‘Joey’ my ‘faithful’ dog pal of 3 years, gave me quite a
fright. Wearing a red hood and a Richard Nixon mask the little bastard jumped out from behind the
wheelie bin.. Well I wouldn’t normally mind this kind of high jinx, but not from a GUARD DOG.
If you’re looking for a new dog, pet or otherwise, I say look elsewhere; this ones a wrong’un.

Thanks for the comment, Rich: very useful to get an opinion from ‘the horse’s mouth’, as it were. However, do please try to remember this is a family site. I’ve edited your comment to remove the expletives on this occasion but I’d appreciate it if you could try to keep it clean with regard to any future comments – you’d be surprised how many children have access to the Internet these days! Kind regards, Markus.

I have owned white german sheperds all my life. Perhaps close to 30 if you include the puppies. They are absolutley wonderful pals. Our current resident guard dog is all talk and no bite with the exception of the weekend bed-wars which I always win but seem to shed a little blood. Last halloween this one painted herself like a white tiger but didn’t fool anybody. Altough she likes soccer and basketball she prefers good ol’ American football, catches passes quite well and never goes out of bounds. She and her linebacker dad enjoy a 4 to 5 mile Saturday morning run and a dip in the river. It’s difficult to determine whos running whom. She also likes to watch TV with her eyes closed.
